black actor to win an Academy Award.
Best
Supporting Actress for her role as Mammy in Gone with the Wind.
Hattie
had requested she be laid to rest here at Hollywood Memorial Park, but, at the
time of her death in 1962 blacks were not allowed.
Finally,
in 1999, this cenotaph was erected here overlooking the lagoon and across the
road from the Fairbanks monument.
